What Is an Electrical Panel Upgrade?

Your electrical panel, also called a service panel, breaker box, or circuit breaker panel, is the central distribution point for all the electricity in your home. It is the heart of your electrical system and is what directs power to every outlet, appliance, and fixture.

An electric panel upgrade is the process of replacing your old or undersized electrical panel with a new, higher-capacity one designed to safely, efficiently, and sustainably handle the capacity requirements of new technologies and modern living.

We needed to upgrade our electrical panel from 100 to 200 amps before installing our solar system, and VivaVolt handled everything from start to finish. Their electrician came out for the initial assessment and explained exactly why the upgrade was necessary and what the process would involve. The work was completed in one day, passed inspection on the first try, and they coordinated everything with the town permit office so we didn’t have to worry about it. The crew was professional, kept the work area clean, and made sure to explain the new panel features to us. Two weeks later, they were back to complete the solar installation. Really appreciated having one company handle both projects – made the whole experience much less stressful. Fair pricing too, especially compared to the other quotes we got. Highly recommend VivaVolt if you’re looking at solar and need electrical work done first.

Our 1980s home had an outdated 60-amp fuse box that needed replacing before we could install our heat pump system. VivaVolt’s team was upfront about the complexity of the job – they had to run new service lines from the street, and the panel location had to be moved to meet current code. What impressed me most was the communication throughout the process. They kept us updated on the permit status, gave us a realistic timeline (3 days total), and showed up exactly when they said they would. The lead electrician walked me through the new 200-amp panel and showed me how to properly label circuits. Everything was done to code, the inspector had zero issues, and they even helped us understand what rebates we qualified for through Mass Save. The pricing was competitive and there were no surprise charges. If you need electrical work done in conjunction with energy upgrades, these guys know their stuff.

When we decided to go solar, VivaVolt’s assessment showed our electrical panel was maxed out and needed upgrading. I was nervous about the cost and hassle, but they made it surprisingly painless. They handled all the permitting and scheduling with National Grid for the utility disconnect/reconnect. The actual installation took about 6 hours, and they replaced our old 100-amp panel with a modern 200-amp setup with room for future expansion. The electricians were friendly, answered all my questions (I had a lot!), and cleaned up thoroughly afterwards. They even labeled every circuit clearly, which our old panel never had. Price was reasonable – about $2,800 for the full upgrade, including permit fees. The best part was that they coordinated it perfectly with our solar installation timeline, so there was no delay. A month later, our solar panels are producing grea,t and we have plenty of capacity for the EV charger we’re planning to add next year. Very satisfied with VivaVolt’s work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrical Panel Upgrades

How long does an electrical panel upgrade take?

Most residential electrical panel upgrades take 6-8 hours to complete. Although your power will be disconnected during the installation, in most cases, utility service upgrades can take 1-2 days, depending on the scope and interference with the utility company. We’ll let you know a clear schedule during your consultation.

What amperage panel do I need?

Most newer homes can get by with a minimum of 150-200 amp service, especially if you plan to install heat pumps, solar panels or electric vehicle charging equipment. A smaller home with minimal electrical might be safe with 100 amps, while a larger home or a home with a robust clean energy system may need 200 amps or more. Our electricians will look at your specific circumstances and suggest the right capacity for you.

How much is an electrical panel upgrade?

All depends upon inspection, VivaVolt will offer a detailed written estimate for the electrical panel upgrade project before any work is done so you’ll know exactly what to pay and how much.

Can I fit heat pumps or solar panels to my existing panel?

Depends on your existing panel’s available capacity. Many existing panels, especially older panels rated at 100 amps or less, do not have enough available capacity to safely support solar installations or heat pumps in addition to the electrical loads in your home. We do calculate your current electrical load during our assessment and determine if your panel can support clean energy systems like solar panels and heat pumps, or if an upgrade will be necessary.

Are electrical panel upgrades eligible for tax credits?

Qualifying electrical panel upgrades may be eligible for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit to earn up to $600 in tax credits. When completed in conjunction with heat pump installation, solar panel installation, or other qualifying energy efficiency upgrades, you may qualify for additional federal tax incentives. Talk to your tax specialist to see how these credits fit your situation.

Can I upgrade an electrical panel myself?

No. Electrical panel upgrades require a licensed electrician to perform the work. This is a high-voltage electrical project requiring coordination with utility companies, permitting, and inspections. It’s extremely dangerous and illegal in Massachusetts to conduct DIY electrical panel work. It’s essential to hire a qualified professional for this critical home improvement.
